How the calculation works
The calculator converts every value to whole minutes. For elapsed time, it handles crossing midnight and then subtracts the break.
Example
From 8:00 to 16:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 h 0 min, or 8.00 decimal hours.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate the difference between two times?
Enter the start and end time. The calculator converts both times to minutes, calculates the difference, and shows the result in hours and minutes as well as decimal hours.
How is time across midnight calculated?
If the end time is earlier than the start time, the calculator assumes that the end time falls on the following day. For example, the difference from 22:00 to 06:00 is 8 hours.
How do I subtract a break from the total time?
Enter the length of the break in minutes in the Break field. The calculator subtracts it from the difference between the start and end time.
How do I convert hours and minutes to decimal hours?
Minutes are converted to a fraction of an hour by dividing by 60. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours, 15 minutes is 0.25 hours, and 45 minutes is 0.75 hours.
How do I add several time periods?
